Afghan Rulers Utilized Left-Behind British Gear to Find Local Nationals That Served Alongside Western Troops, Investigation Is Told
An informant has told an official investigation that British authorities abandoned classified devices enabling Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals that had served with western forces.
Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk
The whistleblower, called Person A, explained that people concerned by the data leak were advised to move homes and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.
Lawmakers are looking into the Conservative government's handling of a catastrophic disclosure of private information involving approximately 19k individuals who had asked to relocate to the United Kingdom to avoid militant rule.
Data Disclosure Occurred
A spreadsheet containing their personal data, such as identities, contact details and occasionally household data, was mistakenly released by an official working at special operations center in February 2022.
The leak was discovered only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had applied to move to the UK surfaced on Facebook.
Taliban Capabilities
“There seems to be a false assumption that militant forces are without comparable resources that allied forces use,” Person A informed the committee.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have your phone number, they can locate you down to within metres. That's precisely what specialized teams accomplished.”
During testimony about whether the Taliban possessed sophisticated technology, the whistleblower declared: “They've got everything.”
Impact of the Information Leak
Preliminary research submitted to the investigation estimated that at least 49 kin and associates of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.
A gag order about the breach was put in force in late 2023 and prevented all details concerning it from public disclosure until recently.
Protective Actions
Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with advised individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been compromised”.
“We advised that they relocate when possible and switched their contact details. Those were the primary information that, if authorities acquired these details, would cause them being traced,” the source testified.
Challenged Assessments
The whistleblower argued that internal investigation performed by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to conclude that the acquisition of the information by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.
“The thing to remember is that affected people are not standing up to militant forces; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves past work history.”
Person A described terrible treatment suffered by affected individuals, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“Instances include young kids who have had their arms broken to try to get the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
