Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
