Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
