Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood has announced what is being labeled the most significant changes to address illegal migration "in decades".

The new plan, patterned after the stricter approach implemented by Denmark's centre-left government, renders asylum approval provisional, narrows the appeal process and proposes visa bans on nations that refuse repatriation.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

People granted asylum in the UK will have permission to remain in the country on a provisional basis, with their case evaluated every 30 months.

This signifies people could be returned to their home country if it is considered "safe".

This approach echoes the method in Denmark, where protected persons get two-year permits and must reapply when they terminate.

Officials claims it has commenced helping people to repatriate to Syria willingly, following the toppling of the current administration.

It will now start exploring forced returns to Syria and other nations where people have not regularly been deported to in recent years.

Asylum recipients will also need to be resident in the UK for 20 years before they can apply for settled status - up from the existing half-decade.

Additionally, the government will establish a new "work and study" visa route, and prompt refugees to obtain work or begin education in order to move to this pathway and qualify for residency more quickly.

Solely individuals on this work and study program will be able to sponsor relatives to come to in the UK.

Legal System Changes

Government officials also plans to eliminate the process of allowing repeated challenges in asylum cases and introducing instead a single, consolidated appeal where every argument must be presented simultaneously.

Aid would still be available for "individuals in poverty" but will be denied from those with work authorization who do not, and from individuals who commit offenses or refuse return instructions.

Those who "have deliberately made themselves destitute" will also be rejected for aid.
