Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 elections wrap up.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor remarked when asked about contemplating a presidential run post the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
Newsom's time in office as governor ends in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he noted that any determination is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent
Newsom has emerged as a high-profile adversary of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and advocating for a proposition that would increase Democratic congressional seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has made him a target from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday interview on Fox News. The secretary revealed a strategy to cut government money from California and warned eliminating the power to provide CDLs.
"I intend to cut $160 million from California," Duffy declared, following a recent tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented trucker that led to fatalities and casualties.
His administration pointed out that the federal government had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a CDL under federal law.
The transportation secretary had before announced he was withholding $40m from the state for ignoring linguistic standards for commercial drivers.
Strong Response from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office retorted in a previous statement responding to the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
Public Opinion and Future Prospects
A recent survey showed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom must consider running for the White House in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has grown to an mean of a third from previous levels, while his disapproval has dropped from an average of more than 40% to under 40%.
Earlier this year, Newsom commented while on a trip several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for 2028.
He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The idea that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, extraordinary," he said. "No one can say? I await who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
