Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.
The victims have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
