Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Documenting Two Dozen Days In Custody

The ex-president of France is preparing a book in the coming weeks called Notes from a Cell, detailing his time endured in custody.

This news came just 11 days after Sarkozy gained freedom as he appeals the guilty verdict for criminal conspiracy in a case to acquire political financing provided by the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he notes in an extract, suggesting the book is more about his musings during seclusion rather than extensive analysis of the packed and struggling correctional facilities in the country.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing in La Santé, where one hears endless commotion,” he states. “The noise unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is fortified while incarcerated.”

Freedom Plea: Recounting the Hardship

At his release request hearing, he was present by video link from a room in prison, depicting prison life as gruelling. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this nightmare bearable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

Sarkozy, who led the nation between 2007 and 2012, was the first past president of an EU country and the first postwar leader of France to experience jail.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.

Reading Material

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the three books he had in his cell: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work the famous story, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual ends up incarcerated then breaks out to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

The former leader was held in isolation for his own security in a space approximately nine square meters including private facilities in the Paris jail in the city. Guards stayed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed solely dairy snacks while inside due to concerns meals provided could have been tampered with. He had facilities for self-catering yet he declined, according to reports. Unclear remains if he will detail his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain each day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings he would be safer out of prison rather than in custody. “He received death threats, listened to yells after dark and emergency responses in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began last month following the judiciary sentenced him to five years in prison on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to obtain election financing during his election campaign.

He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, with a new trial planned for the coming spring.
