A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
