Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Days Following Budapest Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has stated.

Recently the US president said he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Budapest soon to address the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House said the two had had a "positive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The administration withheld further information on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts claimed his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources suggesting the president had pressured him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

However, on Monday the American president endorsed a truce plan backed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the current front line.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he stated.

Russia has frequently resisted against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov said on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the recognition of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated discussions about the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently came ahead of reports that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he remarked.
