Red Cross Accompanies Hamas in Recovery for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official stated that its representatives joined Hamas officials into areas of Gaza still under IDF control to facilitate the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Truce Terms and Captive Remains Handover

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire, which began on October 10, Hamas is required to hand over the bodies of all captives as soon as possible. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far returned the bodies of fifteen of those taken hostage but none in the last five days, as a portion of those bodies are thought to be in areas past the yellow line marking Gaza’s ceasefire.

Red Cross Role as Neutral Intermediary

“At the request of the parties, the Red Cross accompanied a participant in the hostilities as the group searched for the bodies of the deceased individuals beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” said a representative for the organization.

She added: “Those involved to the hostilities established the procedures of the mission and entrusted the ICRC to act as a neutral intermediary. The ICRC was not involved in the discussions.”

She additionally explained: “Our team was not involved in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it take part in the retrieval of remains.”

US Demand and Regional Search Efforts

On Saturday, the American leader issued a two-day ultimatum to the organization. “They is going to have to begin handing over the remains of the hostages who died, which include two Americans, quickly, or the additional nations participating in this great peace will take action,” he wrote on his online channel.

As the 48-hour deadline neared, the group, accompanied by the Red Cross, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israel to search for remains past the boundary marking the withdrawal of troops inside Gaza. An Israeli spokesperson said the delegation would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the search.

This development was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that Hamas representatives had been permitted to access areas of the region under military authority to look for the remains of hostages, alongside Egyptian and Red Cross teams.

“To achieve this goal, representatives were permitted to pass the designated boundary,” the source was quoted as stating.

Footage published by a regional network appeared to show individuals of a Hamas unit – part of the group’s armed faction responsible for holding hostages – escorting a Red Cross vehicle in a coastal area close to a southern city, which is beyond IDF jurisdiction.

Challenges in Locating Captive Bodies

Efforts to locate for the bodies of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most delicate issues in the truce agreed between the parties. However, the effort to locate the bodies has been challenging from the beginning, given the existence of an approximate enormous amount of rubble across the strip, where, as per health officials, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as missing, buried under the debris.

Conflicting Claims on Remains Location

The group has claimed it does not know the exact whereabouts of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with a number of its teams that had been holding the hostages and were reportedly killed during Israeli bombardments.

In contrast, an official representative claimed that the organization was aware of the whereabouts of the bodies. “Should the group made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the bodies of our hostages,” the spokesperson said.

US Position and Weapons Surrender Discussions

While the US president has acknowledged that a portion of the bodies are hard to access, he said that “the rest they can hand over now and, for unknown reasons, they are failing to do so.”

“This could be related to the disarming of Hamas,” he noted.

Washington has said it has received assurances from Hamas that the faction will surrender its arms, though no specific schedule has been established. The militant organisation remains reluctant to surrender its arms without solid assurances about the fate of its fighters.
