The Golden State is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is enduring dryness. This milestone comes on the heels of grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened blaze threats and pressured its enormous farming industry.

A Map Shows Zero Dryness

A recent update from the national drought tracker illustrated that all of California is free from any level of drought. This shift came after weeks of above-normal rainfall that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a weather expert.

After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations

Achieving this status involved intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in recent years, causing widespread flooding, blackouts, and tragic losses. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Even into late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January washed away those remaining dry spots.

A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge

But, authorities caution that being out of drought does not mean complete water security. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation place it at roughly seven-tenths of the typical level.

This snowpack, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for long-term water security. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.

“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

While the drought map indicates no dryness, attention turns to preserving this positive water situation for the rest of the year.
