The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning home,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
