The Mayor-Elect affirms he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, did not confirm his residency plans immediately after his victory in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will forever remain inside me and my work," he added.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he is from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
