The people of Israel mark second remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Israelis have come together around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on that day.
He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an night meeting of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The representative stated the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Plans for assistance deliveries
- After-conflict management of the region
Public Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose brother survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere seems like home now and until every captive are released none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home once more, we can relax again. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We must do any agreement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be secure."
Research now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to end in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli shelling persisted.
In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"When the evening arrives, the anxiety comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, embracing, especially my little child who places his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
Medical Situation
The medical facility in the urban area announced it had received the remains of six people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated additional dead people had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south region, health workers stated.
