The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage makes club a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club chase trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the win at Manchester.
